Welcome to Trowbridge Museum Home Page
A story of Trowbridge, its people and its wool industry.
Trowbridge Museum was first opened in July 1990 and is situated on the 2nd floor of Salters Mill – the town`s last working woolen mill (which shut in 1982).
Salters Mill (in which the Museum is held) is now part of the Shires Shopping Centre which has adequate sheltered parking and facilities for the disabled.
The Museum houses a large collection of machinery telling the story of the towns wool industry. Exhibits include possibly the best surviving Spinning Jenny.
There is also a reconstruction of a Weavers Cottage and several working looms (Demonstrations available most Saturdays.)
The Museum also has regularly changing temporary exhibitions (recent exhibitions have included Trowbridge Town Football Club, Pubs and Brewing, and the “Peoples Show.”)
Trowbridge Museum also has an innovative education project serving Schools and Colleges in the area.
Not only has the Museum interesting information about the wool industry, but also about the town of Trowbridge itself, and how peoples lives changed over the years.
Visit the splendid Whitaker collection, which gives a vivid insight into the everyday life of a local family during the last 200 years.
