Daniel Gooch: Life and Legacy Exhibition

This special exhibition celebrates 200 years since the birth of Sir Daniel Gooch who became GWR’s first Locomotive Superintendent.

In 1840, Daniel Gooch wrote a letter to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, outlining why he
thought Swindon was the ideal place to base the Great Western Railway’s engine repair facility. A year later, GWR directors gave the go-ahead for the now, world famous, Swindon Works.

Visitors get to explore the fascinating life and work of this remarkable engineer as they discover a variety of objects, documents and photographs.

The exhibition includes items on loan from the National Railway Museum and National Achive as well as exhibits from the STEAM Collection.
